Welcome to ‘The Wakefield and North of England Tulip Society’ website; for all who are interested in growing and showing tulips.
A Wakefield Florists’ Society
Originally established in Wakefield Yorkshire England in 1836 by local tulip fanciers and enthusiasts, we now have supporters and members from all across the UK, and several countries around the world. Most notably a very active and successful Swedish contingent and over the years many enthusiastic and knowledgeable Dutch members.
We are an old florists’ society dedicated to growing and showing tulips, but particularly the English Florists’ Tulip.
Many of the tulip varieties that we grow date back to the 1800s, and we maintain the traditional strict standards of Form, Purity and Colour set down by the early florists.
We hope you can take a few moments to share our interest in these amazing historical flowers.

An Old Tulip Tradition
Today only one society remains specialising in tulips, the Wakefield and North of England Tulip Society dating from 1836, and is one of the oldest florist’s societies.

Shows and Events
Our Annual Show is held in the Wakefield area each year, and is open to the public. Details are posted on our Events page. As well as the classes for English Florists’ Tulips, there are classes for Dutch Tulips and a class for Species Tulips.
The society also supports other florists’ shows and events with information on the showing, history and cultivation of tulips.
The Society holds its Annual General Meeting in October with entertaining discussions and presentations following the items of business.
